Welcome to Victim Services of Algoma

We are a community-based service, which assists local police services, hospitals and community agencies in providing short-term emotional support, practical assistance and referral service to victims of crime and tragic circumstance.

About Us

Who Is a Victim?

A victim is any individual who, during a criminal act or traumatic event, suffers loss, injury, harm or trauma. Victims are also family members, dependents and witnesses.

Mission Statement

Victim Services of Algoma is a not-for-profit charitable organization that provides on-scene crisis responders to provide services to victims of crime or tragic circumstance at the request of police, emergency hospital staff and community agencies in Sault Ste. Marie and East Algoma.

Specifically, we provide:

  • Emotional support
  • Practical assistance
  • Information
  • Referrals

We provide other complimentary purposes not inconsistent with these objectives.

What Is the Role of Victim Services?

Victim Services provides immediate emotional and practical assistance to all victims of crime and tragic circumstance 24 hours a day, 7 days a week throughout the Eastern Algoma District.

Victim Services is not a counseling service or a phone distress line. Trained Crisis Responders provide emotional support and practical help to those victimized by crime and tragedy.

Our primary goal is to help immediately, 24 hours a day, right at the time of the crisis and then act as a bridge to other community services which can provide long-term support.

Assistance is provided free of charge by trained Crisis Responders in cooperation with local police, fire and hospitals.

Funding for this program is provided by the Ontario Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services.
